First Week of Work Updates

First Week of Work Updates

I am a bad blogger, but I finally have some updates for you on our first week of work!

When I last left you, we had been picking away at the foundation of the old structure to dig the new foundation. I rented a jackhammer for the job, thinking that my picking days would be over. Well I was wrong. The pick has a very prominent place in Chilean construction and unfortunately for me it is very useful when digging a big hole. The good news is, after day two I gave the pick to one of our volunteers and our close friend Javier Valencia. He turned out to be a way better digger than me. We picked away for two more days, creating a 70 cm level square hole.

Once we finished we had to fill the hole with cement, gravel and sand (funny how those are the same materials we had been digging up for three days). Filling the hole turned out to be WAY easier than digging it though, so things are looking up.

The other positive news I have is that now, thanks to all the hard work I have been doing, I am a total brute . This first week of work was by no means easy for me, but now I swagger around the construction site with my tool belt and shovel. Seriously, all the muggers out there better watch out. Although I may look small, all the shoveling and gravel hauling has given serious butt kicking capabilities.

Those are this weeks updates. Next week we are going to start laying brick! I will leave you with a photo of us and our friend, this big hole.
