As some of you may know, Christian, my husband, was recently granted an immigration visa to the United States. It was a long and expensive process, but we took the time to assure that we filed all of our paperwork correctly, and in the end we were granted a visa. My husband will be a legal immigrant and one day a U.S. citizen.
New legislation now requires police to make an attempt to determine a person's immigration status if there is reasonable suspicion that the person is an illegal alien.
My husband is a legal immigrant, but let me ask you this, do you think my husband LOOKS legal? Hummm, what a head scratcher. Of course he doesn´t, because he is Latino and we all know that none of those people are really here legally.
Now some of you may say, Keri who cares, if he isn´t here illegally he will be stopped and then be sent on his merry little way again. To that, I ask you one question, how much to you like being pulled over by the police? How often are cops nice to you when you are say speeding, rolling through a red light etc. Now imagine that you are constantly getting pulled over by the police, but only when you are driving, when you walking, riding a bike, hanging out in a park too. Would you like to be asked for your drivers license while you are pushing your child on the swing set at the park, or buying a new outfit in the mall? No you wouldn´t because you weren´t doing anything wrong. Well if this law gets extended to other states then that is what it will be like for law abiding citizens that speak a different language or don´t look white.
To anyone reading this I say resist this law before it comes knocking on your door. Take the time to write you local congressman or woman and say, ¨hey just in case, the SB1070 Immigration Enforcement Law sucks and I don´t want it in my state, and on a more personal note I love tacos and corona and Cinco de Mayo. They are such excellent additions to our country¨.
Maybe some of you are saying, hey Keri why are you making a political statement on your blog that is about your buisness. For me and for many this isn´t a political issue. I don´t get to talk about it with my friends and relatives and then go back to living my ¨normal¨ life. This issue affects my life, and I think it is important to let people know how it affects me and people like me before they decide that supporting harsh illegal immigration laws the right thing to do. No matter what your stance on immigration is, this law affect more people than just ¨illegal immigrants¨.
