Our construction day is fast approaching, and we have accomplished many goals this weekend! Our biggest achievement was that we contracted a construction worker and his assistant. He is very professional and loves the idea of working to help his fellow Chilean. Contracting him has allowed us to set the date for the big build. We are going to break ground this Friday the 19th!
In preparation for our big start day, we have been getting things ready for our volunteers and workers. In Chile, there are laws that tell you what to do for everything. Some of these laws are good, however some are rather silly in my opinion. For example a driver can´t listen to the radio of the car while driving. The good news is that you can find a way out of most of these laws. Example, if the driver has a passenger, then technically she isn´t listening to the radio the passenger is, so law avoided.
This also applies to construction regulations. When you have less than eight workers, all the safety laws and workers rights laws don´t apply. This means that for a small crew you just have to tell everyone to be very careful and that is it. No one needs a hardhat, no first aid kit, no nothing. Maybe it is me, but I think just be careful doesn´t really cut it.
We are putting safety first when it comes to this project! Our professional duo will assure that the volunteers are safe at all times. I have also been doing my homework. I have been reading all about work and construction safety and bought all the safety items we will need. I made a very practical construction first aid kit. We aren´t using any, saws, heavy machinery or anything noisy so cutting oneself or hurting ones ears would be tough, however we are prepared for it all. We are also setting up a nice clean space for our team to eat lunch and relax out of the sun and the dust.
On that note, I will leave you with the image of the first two volunteers enjoying some of their brand new safety equipment.
